Behind the Scenes: My Writing Rituals

Writing has always been a deeply personal and magical process for me, a blend of discipline, inspiration, and connection to the world around me. Over the years, I’ve developed rituals that ground me, spark creativity, and transform blank pages into worlds filled with wonder and life. In this post, I’ll take you behind the scenes into my daily and seasonal writing habits. Along the way, I’ll share how nature, moments of quiet reflection (with a warm cup of coffee in hand), and my walks with my little dog, Bear, become my creative companions.
Embracing the Seasonality of Writing
Each season brings its own rhythm and inspiration to my writing process. In January, when the air is crisp and the world feels wrapped in quiet introspection, I find solace in long walks through nature. My favourite spots are tucked away in serene woodlands or along the coastline. The stillness of bare branches against a bright blue sky sparks a sense of renewal, which mirrors my desire to write stories that offer hope and fresh perspectives.
One January ritual I enjoy is photographing the landscapes around me. The frosty grass crunching underfoot, the way the sunlight dances on crisp fresh water, and the stillness in the air all make me feel deeply connected to nature. These moments help me think of new beginnings - both in life and in stories. I often use these images as visual prompts, weaving their quiet beauty into my writing.

Walks with Bear
Another essential part of my daily routine is taking long walks with Bear, my loyal canine companion. Whether we’re exploring quiet woodland paths or strolling along the beach, these walks are a time for reflection and inspiration. The rhythm of walking, the fresh air, and Bear’s boundless enthusiasm help clear my mind and make way for new ideas. There’s something about watching him investigate the world as he sniffs out interesting scents that remind me to stay curious and present in the moment - both qualities that fuel my storytelling.

Coffee Dates and Connection
While writing is often a solitary pursuit, connection with friends fuels my inspiration. Regular coffee dates at seaside cafes are a highlight of my week. These gatherings allow me to share ideas, discuss favourite books or movies, and simply enjoy laughter and companionship.
The cafes near the beach hold a special charm. There’s something about sipping a warm latte while gazing at the colourful beach huts and listening to the waves that fills me with gratitude. These moments remind me of the importance of balance - of stepping away from the keyboard to savour life’s small joys. Often, after one of these outings, I return home brimming with energy and ideas.

A Love Affair with Nature
Living near the sea has shaped so much of who I am as a writer. There’s a quiet strength in the ocean’s rhythm, a reminder that creativity ebbs and flows like the tide. I’ve spent countless afternoons strolling along the shore, breathing in the salty air and marvelling at the interplay of light and water. It’s no surprise that my stories often feature nautical themes or characters with a deep connection to the sea.
Recently, I’ve been enjoying taking photographs of quaint beach huts against a backdrop of vivid blue skies. Their cheerful colours and quirky charm make me think of the endless stories they could tell - of summers past, family holidays, and dreams built by the water’s edge. These photographs, alongside snapshots of glittering waves and footprints in the sand, have become a part of my creative toolkit. I look at them whenever I need to recharge or find inspiration for a scene.

A Cosy Writing Environment
No writing ritual would be complete without the right atmosphere. I don’t have a writing desk - I prefer to sit on my bed with, Bear, and my cat, Roxy, curled up beside me, my laptop resting on my lap. I enjoy the quiet of the room, where I can work uninterrupted, immersed in my stories.
Soft blankets, warm lamplight, and the comforting weight of my pets nearby make this space my sanctuary. A candle or two flickers nearby, adding warmth and a hint of fragrance to the air and, of course, there’s always a cup of herbal tea or a matcha latte within reach. These small comforts transform my space into a haven, a place where creativity flows effortlessly.

Finding Inspiration in Daily Life
Ultimately, my writing rituals are about more than just putting words on a page. They’re about staying present, finding joy in small moments, and drawing inspiration from the world around me. Whether it’s the sight of crisp January skies, the sound of laughter during a coffee date, or the glow of candlelight as I write, these experiences become the threads that weave through my stories.
As a writer, I’ve learned that creativity is a dance between discipline and openness. It’s about showing up to the page every day, even when the words feel stuck, but it’s also about stepping away - into nature, into conversation and letting inspiration find you when you least expect it.
